Common Knowledge

Back to FrontPage

Common Knowledge is material that may not require citation.

If is information that is widely known by the community that you live in, e.g. the current president of the U.S. or Prime Minister of Canada, or material that is found in many different sources.

When in doubt about whether something needs to be sources, please consult your teacher. And if you are not able to, it is better to err on the side of including a source, rather than being accused of plagiarism.

Here is a useful chart from a guide at the University of Toronto.
